In July 2017, the Latvian government approved a more rapid rise in excise duty on tobacco, alcohol and fuel, with a new rate for tobacco taking effect in January 2018 and for alcohol in March 2018. According to the state revenue agency, in the first six months of 2018, cigarette volumes fell by 0.3% and cigar and cigarillo volumes by 25% as a result of higher taxation.
