The process begins by charging the sputtering cathode, which then creates a plasma that ejects material from the target surface. The target material is glued or clamped to the cathode and magnets are used to ensure stable and uniform corrosion of the material. At the molecular level, the target material is directed towards the substrate through a momentum transfer process. High-energy targets strike the substrate and are driven to the substrate surface, forming very strong bonds at the atomic level. This material is now a permanent part of the substrate rather than an applied coating or plating on the surface.
