The project stems from the popularity of mobile payment apps like Swish in Sweden, Vipps in Norway, and MobilePay in Denmark. The P27 project will be based on an open access network and will enable consumers to make domestic and international payments instantly across the Nordic region. Transactions will be able to be made in currencies including Swedish krona, Danish krone, Norwegian krone, and euros. Banks that will support this infrastructure include Danske Bank, DNB, Handelsbanken, Nordea, SEB, and Swedbank.
- The capitalize on the growing popularity of alternative payments among Danish consumers, international payment providers are launching their solutions in the market, most recently Google Pay in October 2018. The solution enables users to make contactless in-store, online, and in-app payments by adding their payment cards to the wallet. In October 2017, Apple Pay was introduced in Denmark - supported by Jyske Bank (Visa debit cards only) and Nordea.
- On January 1, 2018 the government passed a law that prohibited merchants from charging debit and credit card fees for in-store and online transactions. The new law is applicable only for retail/individual cards, thus allowing merchants to still charge corporate or business payment cards.
