In May 2017, the Ministry of Finance cancelled the customs tax on footwear; the historic 12% had been instated to protect local footwear manufacturers, but as these no longer exist the cancellation was welcomed by footwear importers. However, the cancellation is temporary, with the Ministry expected to review its results and decide on its extension at the end of 2018. Prices did indeed drop significantly in 2017 as a result of this move, but the decrease in 2018 was more moderate.
