Erbium-doped fiber amplifier is a kind of fiber amplifier, which adds erbium ions to the fiber core. It is characterized by high gain and low noise, independent of polarization and can amplify optical signals in 1.55 m or 1.58 m bands. It used to be necessary to use optical repeaters to convert attenuated arrival time into electrical signals, which amplify and regenerate the waveform, then convert back to light and resend it. Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (ERFA), one of the greatest inventions in optical fiber communication, was first developed by The University of Southampton in 1985. Secondly, erbium-doped fiber is a fiber doped with a small amount of erbium (Er) ions in quartz fiber, which is the core of erbium-doped fiber amplifier.
