Treatments are required to reduce fluid loss, stabilize shale and prevent damage to formations. Hydrogen sulfide is a poisonous gas. Adding sponge iron to the mud can not only be used as an indicator of hydrogen sulfide, but also can quantitatively remove hydrogen sulfide to prevent corrosion and human poisoning caused by it.
