CO2 and LN2 backup systems are backup kits that provide access to the freezer. As the name implies, they rely on liquefied gas to keep samples at cryogenic temperatures. The backup module controls the addition of coolant to the cryochamber when the temperature rises above a set threshold. The main difference between the two systems is the lowest temperature they can reach and the length of time the liquefied gas remains stable in the tank. Liquid CO2 can maintain temperatures between -55°C and -70°C for months, while liquid nitrogen can drop temperatures to -85 oC but will be consumed more quickly over time, so it needs to be monitored.
