Bioenergy is renewable energy made available from materials derived from biological sources. Biomass is any organic material which has stored sunlight in the form of chemical energy. As a fuel it may include wood, wood waste, straw, manure, sugarcane, and many other by-products from a variety of agricultural processes.

A systemic demand-supply imbalance in the global crude oil markets, which has diminished the popularity of bioethanol, biodiesel, and other alternative renewable fuels can be attributed to the significant decline in oil price. The low crude oil prices have expanded the price gap between conventional fuels and biofuels. EMEA will be the major revenue contributor to the biomass energy market throughout the forecast period.
