      In electronics, a choke is an inductor used to block higher-frequency alternating current (AC) in an electrical circuit, while passing lower-frequency or direct current (DC). A choke usually consists of a coil of insulated wire often wound on a magnetic core, although some consist of a doughnut-shaped "bead" of ferrite material strung on a wire. The choke's impedance increases with frequency. Its low electrical resistance passes both AC and DC with little power loss, but its reactance limits the amount of AC passed.
      A choke is the common name given to an inductor that is used as a power supply filter element. It is an inductor used to block higher-frequency alternating current (AC) in an electrical circuit, while passing lower-frequency or direct current (DC). A choke usually consists of a coil of insulated wire and they are typically gapped iron core units, similar in appearance to a small transformer, but with only two leads exiting the housing. The current in an inductor cannot change instantaneously that is inductors tend to resist any change in current flow. This property makes them good for use as filter elements, since they tend to smooth out the ripples in the rectified voltage waveform. The choke’s impedance rises with frequency. Its low electrical resistance passes both AC and DC with little power loss, but it can limit the amount of AC owing to its reactance. A choke is used in position of a series resistor because the choke allows superior filtering and less voltage drop.
