Sales through home and garden specialist retailers expanded at a respectable clip for a third successive year in 2018, but the rate of progress was noticeably slower compared to 2017. The relatively softer performance was due largely to weaker growth in homewares and home furnishing stores. These stores are highly sensitive to changes in the housing markets and thus were negatively affected by a decline in the number of housing transactions in 2018.
