      Dual Brightness Enhancement Film (DBEF), which also called Reflective Polarizer Film, recycle light from the backlight system that would be absorbed by the LCD and can increase brightness by 50–60%. These films select incident light with a specific polarization state to pass through and reflect the other polarization state back into the backlight where it can be recycled; they are used in TFT-LCD products requiring high brightness, such as TVs, highend notebook PCs, and high-end monitors.
      As does a conventional polarizing plate for LCDs, the plate passes one linear polarization while rejecting the other. But rather than absorbing the rejected light, the plate reflects it backwards so that it hits a second layer, which upon re-reflection rotates the polarization of some of the light so that this time it passes through the polarizing plate. When compared to a standard polarizer, the result is an increase in light output (for the same light input) or a reduction in required power (for the same light output).
