Italy’s construction sector entered positive growth territory in 2017. Commercial and industrial construction generated much of the gain in the year, with the useful floor area in new non-residential building permits surging by 29% year on-year to 11.5 million sq m. Even though residential construction also showed signs of a rebound, the supply continued to be replenished very slowly. The number of issued dwelling permits for new residential units increased by 11.3% in 2017 to just 49,603 units.
